Mandibular resting position training
What it does
Practise noticing daytime tooth contact and letting the jaw rest comfortably with the teeth slightly apart. This reduces unnecessary effort in the jaw-closing muscles.
How to do it
- Keep your lips closed gently without pressing them firmly together.
- Rest the tip of your tongue lightly against the roof of your mouth, just behind your upper front teeth.
- Allow your upper and lower teeth to separate slightly so they do not touch.
- Breathe comfortably and rhythmically through your nose while maintaining this relaxed jaw posture.
Progression
Integrate the resting position during functional, high-stress, or concentrated activities such as typing or driving.
Regression
Begin with a brief check-in while seated quietly: notice any clenching and let the jaw relax without holding a fixed position.
